Game Master Interview: Another day in TurBo's Calendar

Snagged an interview with one of Flyff's most talented GMs, TurBo!

Tell us something about yourself, like how old are you?
I am roughly 27 years old, younger or older depending on who you ask :)

Well what can you tell us about yourself?
I’m just a regular guy. I enjoy video games, browsing internet, and hanging out with friends outside of work. I also enjoy drawing, reading, cooking, and trolling internet forums during my alone time. (Just kidding on that last one, who does that? That’s just rude.)

Is being a Game Master a real, full time job?
Very much so! 8 hours of work a day on average, Monday through Friday. Just like any other regular job :)

How did you become a GM?
I found a job application on craigslist, filled it out, got interviewed, passed, and became a GM. It may be slightly different for other GM’s, but that was the general steps I personally took.

So what does being a GM involve? What does a typical GM day for you look like?
Usually answering massive amounts of customer support emails a day, this takes up 90% of our time. Then on the other 10% we create events and host them for players. It’s pretty fun when we actually do go in-game and interact with players. And in-between those 2, we have an assorted range of random issues to handle, it’s somewhat difficult to categorize them all. All I know is that my day passes by very very fast!

What are some special tasks that you do on the GM team?
I primarily work on account compromised cases. That’s the name we call issues where someone got their account accessed by someone else, and in most cases, had their items stolen or their characters deleted. When I work on these cases, sometimes I feel like I’m on an episode of CSI:FlyFF or something.
In addition to account compromised cases, I do a wide range of art related assets for US FlyFF. Most the time, it’s just the sales or event banners for our front page. Occasionally though, I’ll get to work on something bigger like an email blast poster, or a FlyFF comic. :3

Do you get many stupid emails/tickets?
I personally have not found any “Stupid” emails, but there are a lot of confused emails from players, due to the fact that a lot of our player base may not speak English as their primary language. I guess the only seemingly “stupid” email would be players trying to send us fake information trying to gain in-game advantage or items. This usually results them getting a permanent ban for providing intentional falsified information. It’s like trying to trick the police into giving you free stuff. Don’t do it :)

How many other GMs are there?
From what I heard, there used to be a GM for every server of FlyFF. But now, we primarily have 4 GM’s, and 1 CM (community manager). We’re a pretty tight knit group because of our size.

What is your opinion of FlyFF?
FlyFF (the game) itself is a bit outdated in comparison to the large amounts of newer MMORPG’s out there, but FlyFF’s community is one of the strongest I’ve personally ever experienced out of my entire MMORPG playing career. It sounds kind of cheesy, but the players you meet both in-game and on the forums almost feel like long lost family members. There is a lot of love for this game, and it really shows.

Flyff recently had a version update to V15. What are your opinions?
There was a lot of new content added with this update (most notable ones being the lower level instance dungeon The Wilds, and the Guild House), and a lot of players seem to enjoy it. However, with all the good things, there also came a flood of technical issues that needed to be addressed and fixed. It’s very fun to have new stuff to play with, but sucks when you can’t –actually- play it because you’re busy crashing from bugs or whatnot. Hopefully we’ll be able to iron out all the problems and have players sailing smoothly again as soon as possible.

Are there many female players in FlyFF?
There’s actually a surprising amount of female players in FlyFF. I’m not entirely sure why, but it’s possible due to the large bubbling community or just a multitude of dress up fashion items. Regardless, everyone is welcome whether you’re a dude or a girl.

How about non-English speaking players?
We also have a very wide range of global users, even though FlyFF is available in almost every region (China, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Europe... etc) Again, it is possible due to the fact that foreign communities have been established in the US FlyFF from so long ago, that the lineage of that establishment has continued to this day. We see players talking in different languages in-game all the time, it’s kinda cool actually.

Are there a lot of children playing the game?
 Yes, but we have a pretty wide spectrum of player ages playing FlyFF. From as young as 7 years old to even parents or grandparents. It’s very heartwarming to see an entire family play together. I wish I had that as a kid ;_;

To wrap things up, do you have any tips or secrets for players?
I think at this point, due to the age of the game, the collective player base know more tips and tricks than a GM ever will. If I had to give one tip, it would be to make as many friends as you can. The more friends you know, the more help you will receive regarding everything in FlyFF. But please don’t share your account information with players you meet, this will land you in a bigger mess than you can ever imagine. If there was a single way to lose the game, sharing your account would be it.

Have fun folks, but please watch your safety first! ;)

  3. Alright, I have to ask..isn't it in the TOS that you have to be 13 to play? thinking about the comment about 7 year olds playing...hehe.

  4. So your the guy who makes all the awesome ads and banners and what not! Great work! And I really liked your fun comic you made. Your style reminds me of Zelda for the GC and DS.

I hope you guys interview the entire FlyFF team! Its fun learning more about your jobs.

  5. Red text on white background doesn't go well with some older player's eyes...

  6. @Brian, As far as I can remember of the ToS, I do not recall there being an age restriction to play our games. It may be different pending where you live and it's related internet laws. Regardless, kids can still play with the supervision of an adult. I know very well, a friend of mine has a younger sister (probably around 8 years old) that he lets play FlyFF.

  7. @Pudding, Thanks! I really try to put out more comics and fun illustrations, but it always seems to get busy again right when we think we got everything working properly ;_;

We will definitely try to get more interviews going, stay tuned ;D

  10. As a GM, do you get to create your own gear with ultra awakenings on them? Like gaunts with +10%+10%+10% crit?

    ReplyDelete
  11. @Contamination, Yes, we are free to create ultra powerful weapons that shouldn't exist on the servers. But we only normally do so for testing purposes. My favorite awake is the super negative Move Speed boots that makes you run in bullet time :D (I actually use this to take screenshots of difficult poses actually!)

  12. So as a GM that just unexpected stumbled on a website and found a job that required a job as an admin on flyff, u took it since u probably had experience in computer software or computer programming. You know these jobs most people have no life since they have to do work outside of their jobs, right. Even professors in college/uni even admits that. So I don't think as a 27 year old single dude he even has time to chill with some friends he knows from school.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Admins should really post a pic of themselves to give us a feeling who we are working with. Posting information across the net without any specific ideas if their faking information is quite disturbing cause a lot of people write different things thats not quite to be. You say hang out with friends outside of work. Are you saying hanging a lot of friends and everyday? or once a month or even a few times a week. I doubt u do that since you got to be an admin that requires probably 1-2 year experience on computer programming or computer designing/computer software.

  14. I think this article is bias written by the user. It's probably a hoax or something written by someone and double checked. You don't even mention if your single and you say hangout with friends outside of work. No one writes that formal anymore, your probably of those people that just copied it from some site or someone even told you. Besides I doubt someone that got a job as an admin for flyff would just send in a resume and get an interview. Usually this requires 1-2 year experience as an admin or as a computer programmer/computer designer/computer software.

    ReplyDelete
  15. All gms come and go since the pay isn't that good. Usually people that becomes admins don't really enjoy playing games as much since their work involves with it daily and it loses interest over time. Seriously if you think posting a resume like some admins out there would get their attention and think your better then the former admin, chris. It might be time that you think ur better than him cause he was the best admin indeed. And what's with the quote, "hanging out with friends outside of work". Such a lame phrase no one uses and I bet you don't even have time to do that since your almost 30 and your single.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow, why is everyone being so mean? Its just a casual interview... dont take it so seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @Light: "Admins should really post a pic of themselves to give us a feeling who we are working with."
Due to security reasons, it is general precautionary measures that GM's do not reveal their real pictures. Maybe when we quit, we'll post a photo or 2 up :)

@Dragonlight: "No one writes that formal anymore.."
I'm a classy man, formality is part of my job description ;D

@kawaiisurf: "what's with the quote, "hanging out with friends outside of work". Such a lame phrase no one uses and I bet you don't even have time to do that since your almost 30 and your single."
What? GM's arent allowed to have friends? I think i'm doing this all wrong ;_; Who said anything about me being single ;) Some of our other GM's even have family and kids.

Hope that answers some questions and curiosities!

  18. Hahahah
    This blog is fun :DD
I have always liked flyff :P and being a GM seems to be awesome!! (:
Do you like your job? :P Because you don't need to do boring and annoying stuff like other jobs :O
    I think.. ^^
btw.. Are you sure grandparents play flyff? xD Aren't they little old ? :P

    YAY!!
How did you guys create flyff? :P
    And everything? :P
    xD

  20. heyy!, I like how you did the chat-scam something thing XD
because everyone used to hack the chat and stuff :O
I hate it when Heroes in flyff are rude to noobs :/ Some ppl even hack gpotatoes like they did with my friend :/ She asked her mom if she could buy gpots but she always said no..
And finally when she got like 5k gpots someone hacked her account.. or IDK?

so I think that you should be little more hard on that kinda things.. Many people never get banned :/
or wait...!! Is it true that you can download a flyff penya/exp hack?? and you can disconnect other chars?
Because some dude told me he was using that.
He had like 50 billions but I never believed him . I think it's stupid but he said that was true and he had like 6 cs-pets , clouds and everything...
He showed me everything after I said I didn't believe him...
He told me to give him my account password so he could help me download the hack.. but I never did :O:O:O

    That was scary ...:/

  21. Hii I love you guys who are working with flyff!
Before I played all kind of boring games.. so when I discovered about flyff I got happy :D
    But here's the thing.
    Look
Everyone who have played flyff a long time are so f*cking rich.
I have 40k XD but I never get a chance to be rich.. that is kinda sad...
All the goodly events you have had when I didn't play flyff .
can't you have the scroll event or something with treasure drop box?
But only the noobs get rich ? :P
I mean everyone but heroes? :DD
    or someone like me :D:D:D:D:D:
    I wish....

  22. What I`m saying is even though it doesn`t say your single, it doesn`t say your married either. Being 27 and working as a GM, you would probably need a certain level of experience in this category, probably a computer programmer, computer software, so forth. Basically you would spend more than 8 hours of your job to do the 8 hour shift you so call say. Even say I doubt a 27 year old would have that much free time just to hang out let alone if they had a family with or without kids.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey, like you I use to GM in games. But I'd mostly be involved in private servers, admin/mod/dev. And i'd love to do this in an actual community. So our of curiosity how much does gpotato pay you currently? And how much was the starting income?

    ReplyDelete
  24. nice to know you TurBo XD

    ReplyDelete
  25. A GM that likes drawing, nice ^^
I like drawing too, but I haven't scanned anything in ages

And formal ftw. Way better to read than all the abreviations, lack of punctuation and caps a lot of people use in the web x____x

  26. Hey TurBo I saw on your GM intro that you are a MMA fan and Fedor is your favorite fighter. I myself am big into MMA and you get extra points for mentioning The Last Emperor. I was wondering if you do any grappling/striking training like Muay thai,BJJ,Judo etc. Also, who else do you enjoy watching to fight, and do you watch any of the Japanese promotions like Dream or Sengoku?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I lol'd @ alot of the remarks regarding this interview.

I mean, when you make an account you ussually have to acknowledge that you are 13 years or older. But that is something easily to go around.

Furthermore it is known that there are complete families that play the game, sometimes it were not even the children that started playing this game first.

Finding it weird that people from over 40 years is basically weird, I mean practically everyone has access to internet nowadays, it is naturally for people to look for things to spend their time on, so why not a game like FlyFF?

I once had a message box from the v13 or v14 beta cliënt that said you have to be 15 years or older to play FlyFF. I tried to log the beta cliënt patcher, but the server it was supposed to connect with was already taken off, so I recived that message, I liked it and put it on my signature on the forum. ^^

Furthermore I tend to keep most details about my personal life off the web. As a GM/Moderator it is weird if you were to share all your private information with the public.

Furthermore Gala-net prohibits it's employee's to share those details for good reasons.

Personally I am more interested in the less known things and preferences of the GM's with the game other then private details.
